I wanted the set for Heathers The Musical to be very simple to make sure that the cast, acting and lights were kept the center focus.  The goal was to make sure the hellish institutional 80s school feeling came though to help that I used simple block colors with a nod to artists Andy Warhol and Richard Hamilton.  To maximize space the elements like the lockers on stage transformed from lockers to a bedroom and finally caskets for the funeral.  This show was a challenge in the sense that I had to keep taking things away to make sure that the set wasn’t competing with the lights and costumes.  The large cast made creating the varying levels an easy way to be able to keep the focus on the action.

“Within Planet Ant’s small black-box confines Jennifer Maiseloff has created a set which subtly conveys Hannah’s worlds. (Interesting that an agoraphobic has walls filled with paintings of steps and corridors leading to – Where?)”- Amy J. Parre…

The show’s scenic design, by Jennifer Maiseloff, captures the institutional feel of a past-its-expiration-date high school hallway that has washed out color blocking and a couple of small banks of lockers (one of which folds down for other uses).
